Florida State’s football recruiting class currently has the No. 5 class set for the 2024 cycle, but they have dropped several spots due to a number of recent withdrawals.
Unfortunately for Billy Napier and the Gators, their defensive contributions appear to be on the verge of another downgrade.
Amaris Williams, a top-15 DL player in his class who has been committed to the Gators since June, has been leaning towards Auburn recently, with Auburn insiders now making the official On3 prediction that he will switch to the Tigers.
Losing Williams would just be another domino to fall as Florida struggles to keep its 2024 signing, making the transfer portal even more important for the Gators this offseason.
The Gators have already lost several defensive players, including Wardell Mack and Jamonta Waller. There’s now a lot of smoke that Xavier Philzaim could be out as well, and LJ McCray tweeted a photo from his home visit with FSU instead of the commit image the Gators sent.
Update: As I write this, McCray tweeted an image of the commit. So there’s no need to panic there.
So the Gators and Napier really need something to move forward in a hurry. Losing Amaris to the Tigers will put a lot of pressure on Billy heading into the offseason.
The bottom line is that Billy has to protect at least two of Williams, Filsaim and McCray or he’s going to be in real trouble.
This Gators roster is in dire need of young talent, and Napier appears to have assembled a class that will help turn the program around.
If you can’t get them to persist, things can quickly take a turn for the worse, and it may be difficult to recover from them.
