The Australian Academy of Science will celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2024, with events planned to commemorate 70 years of scientific excellence.
The Academy looks back on its vibrant history and looks to the future, inviting all those interested in science to join in this celebration.
“Our country is rich in scientific talent, including some of the world’s most eminent researchers and experts,” said Academy President Professor Chenupati Jagadish.
“For our 70th anniversary, the Academy will offer a rich program of events, showcasing some of the most prominent and emerging scientists, advocates, and organizations contributing to science every day.”
The ceremony at Canberra’s Shine Dome will kick off a year-long celebration on 13 February 2024, marking the week the Academy was founded in 1954 by Australian Fellows of the Royal Society of London.
Throughout the year, a six-part public speaker series entitled ‘Australian Science’s Journey: Tracing our history and discovering our future path’ delves into the fascinating history and future of Australian science. Each episode tells the story of one scientific field, from the groundbreaking discoveries of the Academy’s earliest fellows, including founding president and renowned physicist Sir Mark Oliphant, to today’s cutting-edge fields. .
The Academy’s annual symposium, The Future of Food: Nourishing the Nation, to be held in March will focus on food security issues that are gaining attention during the World Science Festival in Brisbane.
2024 will also mark the 65th anniversary of Shine Dome, an iconic symbol of Australian science. As part of the ACT Heritage Festival, Shine Dome will be open to the public for his tour on April 20th.
The Academy’s signature annual event, Science at the Shine Dome, will be held from September 9th to 12th, 2024. This event will feature the admission of distinguished Fellows elected to the Academy in 2023 and 2024, providing an opportunity to reflect on the Academy’s rich history and distinguished achievements. future.
