In a chance interview, Antonio Zara III, president of AC Motors Automobile Group, discussed the possibility of a technology partner helping the conglomerate build a system to reuse the batteries found in current EV models. He said he was discussing it.
Notably, AC Motors has already launched NEV models in the market such as BYD Han, Tang, Dolphin and Kia EV6, and will also introduce Atto 3 within the month.
“We are looking at utilizing these used EV batteries as storage packages for alternative power sources such as solar panels,” Zara said in a chance conversation with Zigwheels Philippines.
Zara explained that used EV batteries only have a reduced storage capacity. Current output remains unchanged.
If reused, this move would further reduce pollution and further the cause of electrification in environmental protection.
However, Zara admitted that the main challenge is that collecting used car batteries is cumbersome.
To remove the battery from an EV, you will need to lift the unit as it is mounted under the vehicle. That aside, not all EV owners have the time to hand over their batteries to a facility that wants to reuse the scrap material.
