The results were announced on Wednesday, with Paris Saint-Germain and Porto securing a place in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.
Warren Zaire-Emery’s goal in the 56th minute reduced PSG’s lead to Borussia Dortmund, and they also defeated Europa League side AC Milan with a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United. Things were a little easier for Porto, who defeated Shakhtar Donetsk 5-3 to advance to the finals.
Dortmund, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid also ensured they were top of their respective groups by the final whistle on Wednesday. Barcelona won despite losing 3-2 to Antwerp, while Atleti moved to the top of the table with a 2-0 win over Lazio.
The final 16 teams remaining in the Champions League await their fate in Monday’s draw. Group winners will be seeded and drawn with the unseeded runners-up. Introducing the teams participating in the New Year’s tournament.

Unseeded teams to avoid
Without a doubt, Serie A leaders Inter and French champions PSG are teams that the seeded teams will not want to see in Monday’s draw. The Italian team finished second in the Group D tie-break and have had consistent performances throughout the season, meaning a high-profile round of 16 clash could be on the card. As for the Parisians, they may have been inconsistent throughout the group stage, but with the likes of Kylian Mbappé and Zair-Emery, PSG boast the talent to knock any team out of the competition.

Interesting seed team
While the group winners have done well enough to earn a spot, there are a few teams who are likely to have less worry from the unseeded teams than others – Dortmund and Real Sociedad. The Germans have been the most solid team in a checkered Group F, but they have been inconsistent at times this season, which could prevent them from advancing higher in Europe. Real Sociedad, on the other hand, are treating the Champions League like a reprieve from their average season in La Liga so far, and depending on their opponents, they could catch up.
Leipzig narrowly draws
Most of the teams from the same country ended up in the same pot, so most of the remaining teams are eligible to play each other in the round of 16. However, this is not necessarily the case with RB Leipzig, and the number of spots available is limited. On Monday, Arsenal will face off against five teams: Spanish quartet Atleti, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Real Sociedad.
