SIU’s Earth Science Week to educate people about resources and promote sustainability
CARBONDALE, IL – Learn more about the rocks and minerals that make up our planet during Earth Science Week at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Started in 1998 by the American Geosciences Institute, Earth Science Week aims to promote better understanding and appreciation of the earth sciences and encourage stewardship of our planet. This year’s theme is “Innovating Earth Science for the Earth and People.”
Earth Science Week runs from October 8th to 14th. Faculty from SIU’s Geology and Microbiology Program and his STEM Education and Research Center (SERC) hosted his week-long activities, including a series of brown bag lunch presentations aimed at promoting understanding and sustainability. To do.
The brown bag lunch is held from noon to 1 p.m. at SERC, Pulliam Hall, Room 212, and includes:
Tuesday, October 10th – “Favorite Minerals: Exploring Rock-Forming Minerals and Crystals,” by Daniel Hammer, Associate Professor in the Department of Earth Systems and Sustainability.
Wednesday, October 11th – “Living Soil! Soil as a living organism,” by SERC Researcher Amanda Weidfner.
Thursday, October 12th – “A Sustainable Planet and Our Energy Future,” by SIU Sustainability Director Amy Lemreis and Associate Lecturer in the Department of Earth Systems and Sustainability Lee Gilbertson.
The week concludes with a Rock and Mineral Clinic from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, October 13thParkinson’s Research Institute, Room 101. Rockhounds and the general public are invited to bring in their finds for appraisal by the university’s experts.
