Atlanta officials want to speed up the response for travelers at what is said to be the world’s busiest airport. The incredibly busy airport expects to benefit from the $66 million project, which will speed up security screening and increase the number of passengers per hour, according to a Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport spokesperson. More than 600 passengers could be allowed to pass through TSA checkpoints.

Officials began work on the massive project in May 2022, finishing ahead of the planned April completion date. The project involves refurbishing TSA security screening equipment and replacing approximately 20 legacy screening devices, now with Analogic CT machines. The new machine uses computed tomography technology to produce high-quality 3D images for security checkpoint inspectors.
Atlanta International Airport is ready to screen and serve more than 3.3 million passengers this holiday season, according to airport officials.
Passengers have reportedly complained that access to airport checkpoints has been restricted since 2022, resulting in longer wait times. All lanes at the airport’s main security checkpoint were scheduled to reopen by Thursday to increase capacity to screen thousands of passengers per hour as the holiday rush continues.
The project also included enhanced lighting and surveillance cameras.
