The ’70s-inspired bowl-like “pageboy” cut is making a comeback on and off screen.
This is what the Middle Ages called – they want to restore the hairstyle.
Decades after its 70s Technicolor spotlight, this cheerfully old-fashioned pageboy cut is somehow rising up the ranks as a fall hairstyle staple.
A dangerously close relative of the hated bowl cut, the blunt do is a slick, round bob with bangs that is admired by hairstylists for its chameleonic nature. You can modernize it by adding layers or adding a different style of fringe.
Ilham Mesteur, hairstylist and artistic director of Balmain Hair, says: “Sophisticated geometric cuts, tailored to individual hair type and face shape, guarantee a glamorous and sophisticated look. ” he told POPSUGAR.
“One of the key factors contributing to PageBob’s enduring popularity is its versatility.”
A short French bob cut just above the jawline has Parisian charm, and natural curls add texture.
The “pageboy” is the latest version of the bob that’s taken the internet by storm since Hailey Bieber’s chin-length crop earlier this year sparked a wave of women clamoring for a bigger chop.
Then Jenna Ortega and Mindy Kaling debuted chic lobs, and Kim Kardashian shocked fans with a much shorter haircut this summer to promote her new SKIMS line.
Despite the so-called “bob mania,” the bob has long divided opinion among beauty gurus, as its style oscillates between chic and tacky.
First, there’s the Lord Farquaad-esque “fk ass bob”, or “FAB” for short. This is a cut without bangs, similar to the one seen on Willy Wonka, but too formal, too corporate, or just trying too hard.
The name, which billed TikToker Namira as the “FAB Historian,” became popular after Season 1 of HBO’s “Euphoria,” where Barbie Ferrera’s Kat Hernandez performed a short “do.”
“If this is Genesis, the origin of FAB, then this is the yardstick by which all other Bobs must be judged,” Namira says in the viral clip.
Then there’s the “jellyfish” cut. This attempts to give the person the best of both worlds by cutting a face-framing part like a bob and leaving the rest of the hair longer – formerly by Mia Wallace, The back mimics the shape of Rapunzel – its namesake.
“It’s essentially a version of the mullet that plays with the shape and contrasting lines,” Gregory Patterson, celebrity stylist and Sally Beauty color and style expert, told POPSUGAR.
Finally, the final boss of all Bobs, “Fk Ass Robert,” is a relative of the classic “Karen” cut that screams “I want to speak to the manager.”
A dramatically angled bob, if it can even be classified as a bob, means business. The shortest layer at the back falls just above the ear, and the longest hair hangs down only to one side, reaching the collarbone.
“That’s not Bob, that’s Robert,” TikToker @drcasanovabrown said in a clip that racked up more than 10 million views this week. “She has three biracial children, and they were all late for soccer practice. It’s your fault.”
He said he was the kind of person who would send an appetizer back at a restaurant “even though it was exactly what she ordered,” jokingly saying, “It must be Stacey with an ‘i’ in it.” ” he said.
“All I know is she’s the bad guy in the homeowners association,” he joked.
