More than ever, travelers are visiting the locations seen on screen and recreating the magic of movies and TV shows. The trend, also known as set jetting, has been around for several years, but a study conducted by OnePoll for Expedia Brands found that TV shows are now the destination for travelers over social media sites like Instagram and TikTok. It is said to have had a big impact.
According to the report, more than half of the travelers surveyed researched or booked a trip to a destination after seeing it on a TV show or movie. The phenomenon of using movie locations as travel is now so widespread that one app, SetJetters, has partnered with the film industry to allow directors to record the locations where they filmed scenes for movies and TV.
Visiting these locations “allows the world of film to exist and thrive in people’s imaginations,” SetJetters CEO Erik Nachtrieb told Stacker in an email.
According to data from SetJetters, some of the most popular places to visit are actually already popular tourist destinations. The Netflix series Emily in Paris has brought renewed interest to France, already the world’s most visited country in 2019. The Harry Potter movies continue to bring tourists to London, and some blockbuster movies and TV shows come out of the city. From “Ghostbusters” to “Gossip Girl,” stories increase interest in New York City.
At the same time, the number of tourists using SetJet has begun to increase, even in areas that have not experienced large crowds in the past. Stacker combed through destination trend data from Expedia, the SetJetters app, and local tourism boards to discover which destinations are being visited more by TV and movie lovers. Ta.
