KINGSTON — The Latta High School girls basketball team got off to a cool start in its first round game against Silo at the 13th Annual New Year’s Classic on Thursday afternoon, but didn’t shoot the ball very well. There were too many turnovers. Kingston.
However, they still had a chance to tie the score or take the lead in the second half before the Lady Rebels ultimately won by a narrow margin, 29-26.
“We started very slow and didn’t get going,” Latta head coach Clay Plank told the Ada News. “I didn’t do a very good job of getting ready and it showed. We have to eliminate unreasonable mistakes and stop letting things get in our way.”
The Lady Panthers fell to repechage with a score of 7-5, and the Silos advanced to the semifinals with a score of 6-4.
In the men’s first round, Latta kept pace with the athletic Marlowe for much of the game until the Outlaws ultimately defeated the Panthers 48-32.
Coach Matt Bryant’s club, ranked No. 16 in Class 2A, fell to even at 6-6, but Marlow improved to 5-4.

Silo 29, Latta 26
The Lady Panthers were down in the early 9-2 and 12-4 holes, but bounced back well with an 8-3 run in the second quarter to pull within 15-12 by halftime.
Latta’s only successful attempts in the first seven minutes of the second quarter were two free throws by Kelby Parnacher. But after a steal and assist from Jace Smith, Palnacher scored on a fast-break basket, cutting the Silos’ advantage to 22-16 heading into the fourth quarter.
Kate Williams made a 3-pointer followed by a layup to put Latta back within a 24-24 tie with 3:29 left in the game.
Makayla Clark hit a big triple for the Lady Rebels with 2:43 left to put her team back in the lead.
On Latta’s next possession, post player Jacoby Wooster was fouled after making a bucket in the paint, but was unable to convert a 3-point play and the Lady Panthers trailed by 27 with 1:34 left. They led by 26.
Silo’s Kinley Pierce made 1 of 2 free throws to give her team a 28-26 lead with 1:05 left. The Lady Panthers had several possessions late in the game that could have tied the score or taken the lead, but they came up short.
Following another free throw by Pierce, Latta had one last chance, but Worcester’s 3-pointer raced to the buzzer and missed the mark.
Parnacher led the LHS team with seven points and five steals. Wooster followed with six points and six rebounds.
Pierce led Silo with 11 points and made 5 of 8 free throws. Clark was next with nine points, including two 3-pointers.
Silo made 6 of 11 from the free throw line, while Latta made just 6 of 13 free throws.

Marlowe 48, Latta 32
The Panthers started the game with Marlow leading 15-3, but got off to a worse start than the girls team.
Latta fought back in the first quarter thanks in part to three long 3-pointers from Sam Brown, and his final triple brought the Panthers within 15-10 entering the second period.
Marlow once again extended its lead to double digits at 20-10, but Latta scored the next five points and Parker Pogue’s 3-point basket cut LHS’ lead to 20-15 at the midway point of the second quarter. .
Marlow took a 26-18 lead early in the third period, but once again Latta was able to hang in close.
Deacon Smith hit a pull-up jumper and then scored on a drive to the basket, cutting Marlowe’s advantage to 26-22 at the 3:26 mark of the third period.
The Outlaws finished the frame with a 7-1 spurt and took a 33-23 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Kamen Smith drained Latta’s 3-pointer to make it 35-28 with just under six minutes left, but that was just about it for the Panthers. Marlowe finished the game on a 13-4 run.
After hitting three treys in the first quarter, Brown only scored three total points the rest of the way, leading the Panthers with 12 points. He also had eight rebounds and two steals. Deacon Smith had seven points and five rebounds, and Kamen Smith made two 3-pointers and scored six points.
Marlowe got 14 points from Blade Harris, 13 from Boyles and 11 from Caden Harris, who also had four steals.
