Character-based historical 4X Old World releases its fourth DLC Wonders and Dynasties on January 11th, bringing a slew of new historical characters to the dynastic politics of ancient empires. In fact, there are about 120 new characters, from Hannibal and Caesar to Khufu and Stateira. In addition to that, these histories include 21 new character traits and around 100 new events related to empire politics.
Mohawk Games says those events include “assassination attempts, state dinners, and interactions between historical figures across dynasties, cultures, and nations.”
The other half of the DLC is eight new wonders for the ancient empire to build, the first since Old World’s 2021 release. These include some of the best of all time, such as the Jarwan Aqueduct, which gives you a free Peasant Specialist, the Rock of Jebel Barkal, which gives you a free Temple in your city, and the Colosseum, which spits out a free Swordsman unit.
Old World was developed by Mohawk Games, a game studio led by Civilization 4 designer Soren Johnson. A historical turn-based civilization-building strategy game focused on ancient history. It is noteworthy that this genre contains a large number of innovative elements. Most notable is the character-driven mechanic where relationships between people determine the fate of an empire.
Wonders and Dynasties will be the fourth DLC release for Old World. This follows releases focused on adding more religions and religious figures, one about ancient Greece and the Hittites and another about Pharaohs and Kush.
Old World was very well received upon release. Fraser Brown gave the game an 87 in his 2021 Old World review, saying it felt like a real step forward in 4X strategy design. PC Gamer also named it the best strategy game of 2021.
Old World is available on Epic, GOG, and Steam for $40 USD. The Wonders and Dynasties DLC will be released on January 11th.
