Karamo said the meeting scheduled for Saturday is not official and she will not allow a vote if it is removed. This situation could play out in court if Karamo is fired. Michigan is one of several battleground states where political parties overtaken by far-right leadership are struggling to overcome infighting and funding issues. Similar situations occurred in Georgia and Arizona.
At least 2 civilians killed, 14 injured in minibus explosion in Kabul
ISLAMABAD (AP) – At least two civilians were killed and 14 others injured when a minibus exploded in a predominantly Shiite district of Afghanistan’s capital Kabul, Taliban officials said. Saturday’s attack was the country’s first in 2024. A police spokesperson said the explosion occurred in the west of the city and police had launched an investigation. No one immediately claimed responsibility for Saturday’s attack, but the Islamic State group has targeted Shiite schools, hospitals and mosques in the area in the past.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) – Police in St. Vincent and the Grenadines say American actor Christian Oliver and his two daughters have died in a plane crash near a small private island in the eastern Caribbean. Police said in a statement that the crash occurred Thursday just west of Petit Nevis, near the island of Bequia, as the plane was en route to nearby St. Lucia. Police identified the girls as Madita Klepser, 10, and Annick Klepser, 12. Police said the pilot, Robert Sachs, also died. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear. Officials said local fishermen and divers went to the crash site to help, while the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Coast Guard was on the scene.
61-year-old man with schizophrenia remains missing three weeks after St. Louis nursing home closes
ST. LOUIS (AP) — A 61-year-old man with schizophrenia remains missing three weeks after the St. Louis nursing home he lived in suddenly closed. The Missouri State Highway Patrol issued a silver endangered species advisory Wednesday, saying Frederick Carruthers is missing and not taking his required medications. Carruthers was one of about 175 residents at Northview Village Nursing Home, St. Louis’ largest nursing home. The company that operated the nursing home abruptly closed on December 15, and residents were transferred to about a dozen other care facilities. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is investigating the circumstances surrounding the nursing home closure.
100 New Jersey firefighters battle fire at former Singer sewing machine factory
ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) — More than 100 firefighters are battling a fire at the historic former Singer Sewing Machine Factory building in Elizabeth. Mayor J. Christian Bollwage announced that no one was injured in the fire, which broke out at 5:30 a.m. Friday. Video from the scene shows the building engulfed in flames and firefighters surrounding it. Although some of the buildings have collapsed, the oldest and most historic parts of the complex are not threatened, Bollwage said. For more than a century, thousands of workers produced sewing machines there. The building was sold in August for $1 million, according to public records.
More than 20 people injured in derailment; federal authorities to investigate entire New York City subway system
NEW YORK (AP) – Federal transportation safety investigators will investigate New York City’s entire subway system following a crash and derailment that left more than 20 people with minor injuries. The head of the National Transportation Safety Board said Friday that officials are concerned because Thursday’s derailment is the second serious accident on the subway in just over a month. On November 29th, a subway employee died after being crushed under a train. The NTSB says it typically reviews a company’s entire operations and safety protocols after an accident. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says derailments are rare events and the subway system is safe.
Dominican judge orders Rays shortstop Wander Franco conditionally released while investigation continues
PUERTO PLATA, Dominican Republic (AP) – A judge in the Dominican Republic has issued a conditional release to Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco. He remains accused of having an affair with a 14-year-old girl and giving her mother a car and thousands of dollars in exchange for her consent, according to court documents obtained by The Associated Press. The 22-year-old All-Star is accused of commercial sexual exploitation and money laundering. The girl’s mother also faces similar charges as Franco. She was placed under her house arrest.
