Turkey has become the latest country to recall its ambassador to Israel and cut off contact with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over Israel’s refusal to call for a ceasefire in the ongoing war and conflict in the Gaza Strip.
Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says, “In view of the unfolding humanitarian tragedy in the Gaza Strip caused by Israel’s continued attacks on civilians and Israel’s refusal to accept a ceasefire,” It was announced that the ambassador would be recalled for consultations.
As fighting intensifies and the death toll of Palestinian civilians soars, the Turkish government is hardening toward both Israel and its Western supporters, especially the United States. The two countries only agreed to reappoint the ambassador last year, after a decade of otherwise frozen relations.
The Israeli-Hamas war has been going on for a month, with Israeli forces trying to crush Hamas while surrounding Gaza’s largest city in retaliation for an October 7 Israeli attack that killed about 1,400 people.
As the conflict continues, many countries have recalled their ambassadors to Israel. Here is the list of countries:
- Bolivia: Bolivia became the first country in Latin America to cut ties with Israel since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack sparked a splintering conflict. Israeli authorities say Hamas has killed more than 1,400 people, mostly civilians.
- Honduras: Honduras on Friday recalled its ambassador to Israel to discuss the “grave humanitarian situation” facing Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. “Faced with the serious humanitarian situation suffered by Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, the government,” Foreign Minister Enrique Reina told X news agency, has summoned special envoy Roberto Martínez to Tegucigalpa “for consultations.”
- Bahrain: Bahrain announced Thursday it would suspend economic ties with Israel and recall its ambassador, citing the Israel-Hamas war. Israel’s Foreign Ministry said it had not been informed of any decision by Bahrain, a US ally that established diplomatic relations with Israel in 2020.
- Chile: On October 31, the Chilean government recalled its ambassador to Israel for consultations in response to Israel’s alleged violations of international humanitarian law stemming from recent military attacks on the Gaza Strip. Chile also said the Israeli operation amounted to “collective punishment” against Palestinian civilians in Gaza.
- Columbia: Colombia recalled its ambassador to Israel on October 31 after President Gustavo Petro threatened to sever diplomatic relations if the Israeli military did not stop attacking civilians in the Gaza Strip. Peter was one of the first world leaders to condemn the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip.
- Jordan: Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said Jordan’s ambassador to Israel would only return to Tel Aviv if the country halted the war and accused Israel of an “unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.”
Saudi Arabia and UAE suspend diplomatic normalization negotiations
Amid the escalating war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, Saudi Arabia has suspended talks on possible normalization of relations with Israel. The US-mediated normalization talks were part of President Joe Biden’s ambitious project to normalize the Middle East and explore trade in the subcontinent.

Saudi Arabia has not previously recognized Israel and was not a party to the 2020 Abraham Accords brokered by the United States. The agreement saw Gulf neighbors Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Morocco establish formal relations with Israel.
The UAE, along with Morocco and Sudan, broke a long-standing Arab agreement to normalize relations with Israel in 2020. However, Anwar Gargash, advisor to the UAE president, said Middle Eastern powers should continue their efforts to reduce tensions in the region through trade and commerce. Despite the Israel-Hamas war, economic ties continue.
