Jalen Hurts doesn’t like to talk about his injured left knee, but he opened up about it Sunday night.
“Selfishly, I don’t think the bye week could have come at a better time,” Hurts said.
no kidding.
There were serious questions about whether Hurts would be able to complete Sunday’s game against the Cowboys after seeing his knee hit by DeMarcus Lawrence’s helmet late in the second quarter.
By now you probably already know: He did, and the Eagles won a close game, 28-23.
Hurts did not leave the field after taking the shot to the knee, but the next play resulted in a handoff, and Hurts limped to the bench and continued to drag himself to the locker room with four seconds left in the first half. .
Hearts teammates have seen him play through pain before, but even they doubted whether their leader would be able to finish the game.
“I had no idea how he felt,” left tackle Jordan Mailata said. “And then at halftime I arrived and this guy was walking around with a perfect IV bag and said, ‘Let’s go.’” We’ve got to get this going. ”
Hurts was the last player to come out of the tunnel in the second half, but he immediately led the Eagles with a 60-yard touchdown drive, giving them a lead they would never relinquish. The Eagles’ offense was definitely in disarray until the end, but Hurts was the catalyst in the third quarter as the Eagles built a lead.
His teammates have previously said watching their leader play through injury is a morale booster. That momentum was back on Sunday.
“I don’t like that,” Hurts said. “I want everything to go well, but like I said, I’m going to do whatever it takes for this city and my teammates. I need what I need. Simply put, that’s it.” Uh, I’m so happy that we were able to get this win and we showed so much resilience.”
On the afternoon, Hurts completed 17 of 23 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns. Despite the injury, he rushed 10 times for 36 yards and even scored a touchdown on a QB sneak in the second quarter.
The Eagles are keeping quiet about Hurts’ injury, but the truth is they can’t hide it. We’ve all seen him limp during games in recent weeks.
“Yeah, again, he’s really tough,” head coach Nick Sirianni said. “However, there was never any question about his playing status, so he was never on the injury report. A great leader, a great player, when it matters, stand up.
“That’s who he is. So whether his body feels 100 percent or not, which nobody’s body does at this particular point, he’s a warrior. He’s a big-time He’s a player, so he’s going to get through the bruises and bruises and play at a high level.”
Through nine games, Hurts has played every offensive snap for the Eagles and is one of the frontrunners for the league MVP award.
The Eagles enter their bye week with an 8-1 record, the best in the NFL. They won’t return to action until Monday Night Football in Kansas City on Nov. 20.
Hearts will need more than two weeks to recover from his knee. Asked about his recovery plan, Hurts said he wasn’t sure.
If nothing else, it’s okay to take a break.
“I really don’t know what to say. It was a muddy win, a muddy win,” Hurts said. “It was a tough win. Hats off to that team. It’s always very competitive and they have great players. But I don’t think the bye week could come at a better time.”
