The deputy speaker of Bahrain’s parliament says members of the legislature are pressing for the Persian Gulf country to reverse normalization of relations with Israel following the occupation regime’s devastating war in the besieged Gaza Strip. Ta.
Abdulnabi Salman said in an interview with the Arabic-language broadcast of Russia’s Sputnik news agency on Monday that Bahraini lawmakers are now considering negotiations with Israel three years after Manama’s government signed the U.S.-brokered Abraham Accords. He said he was calling for an end to diplomatic relations.
“The demands of Bahraini parliamentarians reflect the aspirations of the Bahraini people. [Bahraini] People,” Salman told the media. “The most important demands are expressed in the complete cessation of normalization and the severance of all ties, which would mean the cancellation of the Abraham Accords.”
Salman added: “Any decision regarding Bahrain-Israel relations will ultimately be taken by Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and his government.”
Bahrain’s House of Representatives announced last week that Bahrain had suspended economic ties with Israel following the regime’s brutal attacks on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Bahrain also recalled the occupied territory’s ambassador and suspended flights between Manama and Tel Aviv. Since Israel began the war in Gaza, at least eight countries, including Turkey and Jordan, have withdrawn their ambassadors from Israel.
The death toll from Israel’s brutal invasion of the Gaza Strip exceeded 10,000 on Monday. A month after the occupation regime launched a war against the besieged territory on October 7, Palestinian resistance forces have launched an attack on the occupying entity in response to decades of brutality against Palestinians by the Israeli regime. The regime also cut off one of the world’s most densely populated places from basic supplies such as water, electricity and fuel. 2.3 million Palestinians are at risk of starvation due to shortages of medical supplies and food.
Bahrain and the Israeli regime established diplomatic relations in 2020 as part of the US-brokered Abraham Accords.
Back in 2021, Bahrain’s main opposition group, the Al-Wefaq National Islamic Association, denounced Manama’s normalization of diplomatic relations with Israel as a “crime,” saying that the policies of the ruling Al-Khalifa government were a threat to the Bahraini people. He emphasized that it was not in accordance with his will.
The country has seen numerous protests since the approach, denouncing the detente as an example of “treason.”
