Yesterday, MPs unanimously approved the government’s hastily drafted aviation agreement with Chile and referred it to the Shura Council for consideration.
Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Mohammed Al Kaabi, said: “We have agreements with Brazil, Mexico and the United States. Direct flights to the United States will be launched next year, and we are working on a similar agreement with Canada. “There is,” he said.
“Our exports to Chile are $2.5 million a year, and our imports are about $20 million,” he added.
“We were approached by Chile about an agreement and after researching their investment market, we saw potential for the future.
“For us, it is also a strategic destination connecting the two American continents.”
Lawmakers pushed for an air deal based on Chile’s position on Palestinians in Gaza. However, they said there were around 100 aviation agreements, most of which were invalid.
They renewed their call for air services to Iraq and Syria to resume.
Meanwhile, Parliament also unanimously approved the lineup of three new commissions of inquiry on Gulf Airlines, outsourcing, and Bahrainization in the private and government sectors.
The establishment of the three investigative committees was approved by Congress two weeks ago.
