The “Casts Of An Island” exhibition held its grand opening on Wednesday night, setting out to transform the Mercedes-Benz showroom at the entrance to Nicosia into a contemporary art museum for a month.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Lina Kasianidou, Deputy Minister of Culture, on behalf of the President of the Republic.
The exhibition was organized in cooperation with the Cyprus Import Corporation (CiC) and marks the 70-year presence of Mercedes-Benz in Cyprus.
Curated by collector Nikos Chr. This exhibition by Patitis, the publisher of Philefseros, will feature 25 museum-sized works, primarily belonging to the non-profit organization CYCO (Cyprus Center for Contemporary Art), many of which will be shown for the first time. Mercedes-Benz’s historic and collectible models from past decades, such as Zena Gunter de Tiras’ famous limousine, will interact with contemporary works of art by Cypriot artists, among others.
On display alongside a vintage Mercedes-Benz model will be architect Zaha Hadid’s sofa “Oush” (1985/86), a parallel projection of Nicosia’s Freedom Square, designed by her office. is.
The exhibition’s title, “Casts Of An Island,” is derived from the artwork of the same name by visual artist Socrates Socratus, which was prominently displayed at the event. In addition, the exhibition includes Kritza Antoniou, Banu Cenetoglu, Nikos Charalambides, Subbas Christodoulides, Zaha Hadid, Mustafa Furusi, Demetris Neocleas, Maria Perentu, Melina Shkroglou, Lefteris – Includes works by artists such as Tapas, Panikos Tembriotis, Kostis Veronis, and Alexandros Yorkadzis.
This collection will serve as a prelude to a major exhibition of the same name scheduled for summer 2024 in Limassol, commemorating 50 years since the Turkish invasion.
