The Court of Cassation has confirmed the one-year prison sentence given to a man convicted of embezzling money from a colleague.
The incident dates back to a year ago when the victim asked the defendant’s service to exchange BD11,000 into US dollars.
According to court records, the defendant agreed to process the money order and return equivalent funds to the victim.
However, after receiving the money, the defendant allegedly rebelled against the deal and did not return the money as promised.
Prosecutors allege that despite the victim’s repeated complaints, the defendant failed to honor the agreement and appropriated the money.
The victim eventually filed a formal complaint and submitted social media communications as evidence of the transaction.
An investigation was conducted. After thoroughly reviewing the evidence, a lower court last year found him guilty of embezzlement and sentenced him to one year in prison.
The convicted person appealed the conviction, but the appeals court dismissed the appeal.
With no other recourse, the defense escalated the case to Bahrain’s highest judicial body, the Court of Cassation.
In a recent judgment, the Court of Cassation upheld the original one-year prison term.
The decision was the culmination of a legal process that secured prison sentences for individuals found guilty of misappropriating entrusted funds that were supposed to be used for previously agreed services.
