(CBS Detroit) – A 20-year-old East Point man is facing multiple charges after allegedly driving a stolen vehicle and fleeing from police.
Melvin Cooley Klein IV, of Detroit, was charged with third-degree fleeing and eluding, unlawful operation of a motor vehicle, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting or obstructing an officer, felonious firearm, alteration of identification marks on a firearm, and operating a motor vehicle. He has been indicted. License suspended.
He was arraigned on Monday, November 13th and received a $250,000 cash/bond. A psychiatric evaluation is also required. If released, he will be required to wear a steel GPS tether, have no weapons, have no contact with the victim, not leave Michigan, not drive a vehicle, be under house arrest, and possess alcohol or drugs. Must have and have not.
According to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, East Point police spotted Cooley Klein in the stolen vehicle and gave chase. He drove into a field and one of the officers hit his car. Police said Cooley Klein got out of the car and fled, but was arrested.
He was in possession of a firearm and another firearm was found in the vehicle.
“Fleeing from police not only endangers police officers and innocent people, but also makes the situation worse for the person fleeing. By prosecuting those who choose to flee, we can protect our communities. “This sends a strong message that we will not tolerate such dangerous behavior.” “We are committed to keeping the people we serve, including our law enforcement officers, safe,” the Macomb County Attorney’s office said. Peter J. Lucido said in a press release.
A probable cause conference is scheduled for Nov. 21, and preliminary testing is scheduled for Nov. 28.
