Paul Azinger has been named chief golf analyst for NBC Sports. The move was first reported by the Associated Press and confirmed by Golf Digest.
NBC did not update its contact with Azinger, but sources told Golf Digest the decision surprised Azinger. His last event was the Ryder Cup and he is not scheduled to participate in the next Hero World Challenge.
Officials told Golf Digest that the move is part of a potential overhaul of NBC Sports’ golf coverage and could lead to further changes to the company’s Golf Channel brand.
Azinger became NBC Sports’ lead analyst in 2019 following the retirement of Johnny Miller. From 2006 until 2015, he served as the lead golf analyst for ABC and then ESPN. In 2016, he joined the Fox Sports team for the USGA Championship schedule.
In a statement to golf journalist Steve Eubanks, Azinger said, “I was very honored to work with Dan Hicks, the other talented NBC broadcasters, lead producer Tommy Roy and everyone behind the scenes.” I cherish it,” he said. “They are a great team and I will miss them terribly. I am grateful to them and the countless others who supported and helped me during my work in television. , and we believe in what the future holds for the great game of golf.”
At the time of writing, there has been no official announcement as to who will replace Azinger in the booth.
