In their bilateral meeting, the leaders of Bahrain and Qatar reviewed the development of the Bahrain-Qatar Causeway project and instructed the relevant authorities to complete the necessary plans to begin implementation of the project.
The review was announced during a meeting in Manama between His Highness Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar. It was done inside.
The two leaders also considered ways to further strengthen the partnership and cooperation between Bahrain and Qatar.
The causeway will connect the northern region of Qatar with the east coast of Bahrain. Once completed, the approximately 40km Qatar-Bahrain Causeway will reduce travel time between Bahrain and Qatar from five hours to 30 minutes.
A dual two-lane highway with a railway platform will be built on this causeway, making it a total of four lanes.
The bridge project was scheduled to be built in the past decade, but fell through in the wake of the regional crisis.
Under a memorandum of understanding signed in 2005 to begin the project, a joint agency was established and entrusted with the management, maintenance and operation of the embankment and investment in its facilities.
He said the project will have a very positive impact in promoting the strong and historic ties between the peoples of the two countries and will achieve the two countries’ aspirations for closerness and ease of travel.
A 2004 report in Gulf Construction magazine said Danish engineering consultancy group Cowi International provided preliminary designs for the embankment.
Approximately half of the embankment will consist of a bridge, and the rest will be an expressway built on reclaimed land. The viaduct will rise 40 meters above sea level at some points to allow vessel traffic.
The project was expected to take four years to build. -TradeArabia News Service
