ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Thinking about the holidays? Thanksgiving weather reminds Glen Johnson of the movie “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.”
We know that weather can have a big impact during this busiest travel time of the year.
Start at the local Rochester International Airport. The weather will be fine on Monday. The sky is clear and visibility is good. However, regional airport hubs are a different story.
A “hub” is an airport used by airlines to centralize passenger traffic and operations. Traditionally, these cities suffer the most from bad weather. There are currently no major weather problems in the eastern half of the country. However, there is one small concern if you have a connecting flight at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport.
National radar shows precipitation now reaching Chicago. Although it’s not winter weather, the rain could cause flight delays over the next 24 hours.
That rain is heading next door to Western New York. As a result, local car travel will be a concern on Tuesday. News10NBC First Alert “GPS” Tuesday’s weather started out dry in Rochester, but ended with rain. Expect a mix of rain and wet snow to arrive by late morning.
That mixed precipitation will then quickly turn into all-out rain throughout the afternoon and evening. As the day progresses, road spray and reduced visibility become a problem, reducing speeds on the area’s highways. Overall, the best times to travel on Tuesday will be before 11 a.m. and after 8 p.m., when the rain will eventually ease. If you head west on the New York State Highway, you may experience occasional rain. As we move east along I-90 toward Syracuse and Albany, we will see mainly dry conditions early in the day, with rain and wet snow arriving by late Tuesday evening.
The goal is to keep everyone safe while traveling during the holidays. Personally, Glenn is looking forward to staying home and deciding what pie to have for Thanksgiving dessert.
