John James Wirtz, 55, Altoona, passed away suddenly on Thursday. He was born in Altoona, the son of the late William B. Sr. and Judy Jean Wirtz.
Surviving are a daughter, Amber “Nikki” Williams of Altoona; son, Justin James Wirtz and wife Hattie of Altoona; Grandchildren: Hayley, Abby, Jarek, James, Savannah, Jase, Riley, and Jack. and siblings: William B. Wirtz Jr. (Brenda), Kevin Wirtz Sr. (Carmen), Pamela Wirtz (Kristin), and Sean Wirtz (Lisa).
He was preceded in death by his uncle, Robert “Spike” Nail.
John retired from the State Correctional Facility in Chester in 2015 as a sergeant.
He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, riding his motorcycle, and playing bingo with his daughter. He was also an avid Steelers fan, but most importantly, he loved spending time with his grandchildren. They had fun playing games, going on adventures, and playing Pokemon Go around town. One of his greatest pleasures was cooking meals for his family during the holidays.
John was a veteran of the United States Army and spent an extended period of time in Panama.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Bellwood Fire Hall, 399 S. First St., Bellwood.
Arrangements are by Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., 719 N. Fourth Ave., Altoona.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John’s honor to a charity of the veteran’s choice.
