The Eagles have downgraded star tackle Lane Johnson to questionable for Sunday afternoon’s game against the Bills.
Johnson, 33, had been a full participant in practice all week, but woke up with groin pain on Sunday and reported it to Eagles trainers.
Johnson received treatment hours before game time and is scheduled to undergo an MRI before the game.
The Eagles’ inactive players will be announced at 2:55 p.m., ahead of the 4:25 p.m. kickoff against the Bills at the rink.
The Bills have 39 sacks, second in the NFL this season. Veteran Leonard Floyd led the way with 9 1/2 sacks. Typically, Floyd charges from both sides of the line, but in this game it would make sense to have him counter a good tackle. Either try Johnson’s injury or beat his backup.
If Johnson is unable to play, veteran Jack Driscoll seems likely to be the next choice. When Johnson had to leave the game against the Jets after just nine snaps, it was Driscoll who took his place as the Eagles would lose their only game of the 2023 season. Johnson missed the remaining Jets games, but has played every offensive snap in the four games since.
It’s hard to overstate how much Johnson has meant to the Eagles, especially in recent years. Since the 2016 season, here are the Eagles’ records with and without Johnson:
Match against Johnson: 70 wins, 31 losses, 1 draw
No Johnson: 10-22
