To say the Giants are fully committed to acquiring two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani in MLB free agency may be an understatement.
San Francisco is believed to be one of the few MLB teams to have a strong shot at the reigning AL MVP this offseason, with the top official reportedly named by the Japan Professional Baseball League’s Orix Buffaloes. He also has interest in free agent starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto. A 45-day deadline to sign with a team opens on November 20th.
MLB Network’s John Morosi appeared on Hot Stove on Tuesday and said the Giants are “aggressively” pursuing both players and are “committed” to acquiring either player this offseason. ” reported.
“This is MLB’s flagship franchise looking for a new identity… Shohei Ohtani would probably mean more for the Giants to acquire him than any other team, because, yes, he’s an American… Because of what it means to the Japanese American fan base in the Bay Area,” Morosi told Harold Reynolds and Basgersian. “But more broadly, it’s on the field. They need to find a way to get back into this National League West contention.”
Morosi said the Giants are risking more than just money to acquire Ohtani and Yamamoto.
“According to sources, the Giants are ready and are putting all their heart and money into acquiring either Shohei Ohtani or Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the coming weeks.”
Will Ohtani be the next available superstar to break the Giants’ hearts? Morosi believes San Francisco could have an interesting pitch for Ohtani.
“If you look at the Giants’ lineup, you can see their rotation. What the Giants in particular can offer Shohei Ohtani is not necessarily a completely blank canvas, but that’s basically it,” Morosi said. explained. “They might say, when you come back and take the field (in 2025), we’re happy with a six-man rotation, but we can do that. Keep this position in the lineup. We can do it if we want to, or wherever it is.” Let me tell you this. This will be your team. ”
Ohtani reportedly wants to keep his free agent visit private, as he reportedly could sign soon, on or before the MLB Winter Meetings in Nashville from Dec. 4-7. He is reportedly considering putting his contract with the team on hold if news of his visit becomes public.
There may not be much news about Ohtani until he signs, but it’s becoming clear that the Giants are doing everything they can to get him.
