Chinese automaker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group has signed a partnership agreement with electric vehicle manufacturer Nio to collaborate on battery replacement technology, making it the second automaker to partner with Nio after Chongqing Changan Automobile.
Geely Automobile announced on Wednesday that the two companies will cooperate on battery standards, technology exchange, and model development for private and commercial vehicles.
Battery swapping allows EV owners to replace a discharged battery pack with a fully charged battery pack instead of charging the vehicle at a charging station.
Geely Auto said that the partnership with Nio will further standardize battery replacement technology, expand the scale of the battery replacement network, and accelerate the decarbonization of the auto industry.
Earlier this month, Nio announced a partnership with state-owned Changan Automobile to develop electric vehicles with swappable batteries.
Nio has previously said it believes battery swapping provides a superior user experience compared to charging and remains a distinct competitive advantage for the company.
