One of the most anticipated games of the year opens in Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon, but one of the reasons everyone was looking forward to the 49ers’ visit is because of what they did the last time they visited Philadelphia. I mean, did it happen?
It was an easy win for the Eagles in last season’s NFC Championship Game due to injuries to 49ers quarterbacks Brock Purdy and Josh Johnson. The 49ers were not shy about expressing their belief that things would have worked out better if it weren’t for these losses, especially the loss of Purdy, as they hadn’t lost a game in which Purdy started at that point.
But Purdy said Thursday he’s not spending a lot of time reflecting on what happened in January.
“Shall we go in there? become sentimental aboutMan, I’ve come a long way since then,” Purdy said, via 49ersWebzone.com. “Actually, that’s not true. We have goals and we strive to be the best version of ourselves every week. So am I going to come into the game saying I want revenge or something? That’s not it. . So I’m just going to do my job and try to be the best block for this team.”
Purdy pointed out there’s a lot more to do than just get back to winning ways against a team that finished the season.
“Yeah, I had some injuries there too, but today is week 13 for me,” Purdy said. “We’re traveling in a hostile environment. It’s late in the season, so obviously every game is important for us. That’s my mindset. Are we going to come back and feel a certain way? None of that. Also. It’s a new year and two new teams that are doing things a little bit differently. So I look at it that way.”
The Eagles and 49ers could be heading to another playoff matchup, and if things play out that way, the revenge angle will be a bigger factor for Sunday’s loser.
