Key updates for Saturday, December 2nd include:
Vaishali becomes Grand Master
Another Indian grandmaster of chess and this time it’s something special.
Vaishali Rameshbabu became the country’s 84th Grand Master and the third Indian woman to achieve the title. She and her younger brother Pragnananda were also the first brother-sister duo to win the Grandmaster title in chess.
Vaishali won her first two matches at the ongoing Elobregat Open in Spain, achieving a live viewership rating of over 2,500.
It has been a great year for Vaishali, who had earlier qualified for the Candidates Tournament. She and Pragnananda will also become the first brother-sister duo to play in their respective Candidates tournaments. Vaishali earned her third GM qualification earlier this year, after which she won the FIDE Grand Swiss tournament. She was also part of the women’s chess team at the Asian Games, which won a silver medal in the team competition.
Harika Dronavalli was the last Indian woman to win the GM title way back in 2012. Connally Humpy was India’s first female GM in 2002.
