PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sean Couturier scored the only goal in a shootout and the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 on Saturday night.
After Guentzel forced overtime with 21 seconds left, Samuel Elson stopped a shootout by Jake Guentzel, Sidney Crosby and Brian Rust to give the Flyers the extra point. Tristan Jarry stopped Tyson Foerster and Travis Konecny.
Foerster scored his fourth goal of the season in regulation and added an assist to extend his scoring streak to three games. Owen Tippett scored his eighth goal, followed by a shorthanded goal from Scott Laughton.
Elson made 29 saves for the Flyers, ending their losing streak at two. Philadelphia is on a five-game winning streak and has won two of their last six games.
Guentzel scored two goals in regulation and Kris Letang added a second for the Penguins, extending their scoring streak to four games, but overall they lost four of six games.
Pittsburgh played without two bottom-six forwards, Matt Nieto and Noel Acciari, who were out with lower-body injuries.
Jarry stopped 31 shots. He scored a goal against Tampa Bay on Thursday, becoming the 14th goaltender in NHL history and the first in franchise history to score a goal.
Last season, Pittsburgh won the season series against Philadelphia for the first time since the 2017-18 season. Philadelphia has won five of its last 14 games against the Penguins.
The teams will play again on Monday in Philadelphia.
Guentzel scored with 20.6 seconds left in the third period, forcing overtime. Rust redirected Evgeni Malkin’s pass to Guentzel, who scored his ninth goal of the season behind Elsson near the post.
Guentzel, who tied Martin Straka for 11th in franchise history with 442 points, has scored in 16 of his last 18 games, including five in a row. He has 41 points in 33 career games against Philadelphia.
Foerster scored a power play goal at 13:52 of the third period, initially giving Philadelphia a 3-2 lead. Pittsburgh had an early power play when Konecny gave up an interference penalty on Erik Karlsson, leading to Foerster’s goal on the man advantage.
Guentzel gave Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead with 1:50 left in the third period. Lawton tied the game with a short-handed goal at 7:01 of the third inning. Following a Flyers clearance, Lawton beat Malkin for the loose puck, and Malkin slipped a shot under Jarry’s arm with one second left on the penalty.
Letang scored Pittsburgh’s first goal at 14:31 of the second period. Letang’s 50 points against Philadelphia ranks him first among active players and ninth among defensemen in NHL history.
Tippett scored a breakaway goal at 16:47 of the second period to tie the game.
