Running back Dalvin Cook joined the Jets with big dreams. All eyes were on how his seventh NFL season would end, but things turned out to be quite the opposite.
Cook, who had a career-low one carry in the Black Friday game against the Dolphins, is not satisfied with his role.
“For players who have achieved success in this league, get annoyed” Cook told ESPN.com’s Rich Cimini. “You want to be more productive.”
Cook had 50 carries for 162 yards in 11 games. Starter Breece Hall had 124 attempts and 569 yards.
“I wanted to be in the right situation for me,” Cook told Cimini. “Like I said, I want a chance. I feel good. My body is ready to roll. I was hoping for a great opportunity.”
Cook told Cimini he would not seek release because his family is settled in New Jersey. Even if he doesn’t request his freedom, the Jets could waive him if they are eliminated from playoff contention, and another team could claim waivers on his contract and the Jets could waive his $7 million annual salary. I hope they can save the rest.
Coach Cook told Cimini that the former Vikings running back would not require any more touches.
“Honestly, if you play my tape, I feel like I’ve proven myself in this league,” he said. “I’m not going to beg for a carry. I feel like I was brought here for a reason.”
Whatever the reason, it didn’t work. Anyone. Even if Cook doesn’t want to leave New Jersey, there could be an opportunity to partner with a championship contender as the playoffs approach.
If the Jets aren’t going to use him, why not cut the cord and let him chase championships elsewhere?
