The Bills gave up a 14-point lead Sunday night in Kansas City, but found a way to win.
A field goal by Tyler Bass shortly after the two-minute warning gave the Bills a 20-17 lead, and they held off Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in the final minute to secure the victory.
It looked like the Chiefs would score a miracle touchdown on their final drive and pull out the win. Tight end Travis Kelce caught the pass and threw it back to Kadarius Toney, who ran the ball into the end zone. However, the officials ruled that Toney had lined up offside, and the score was off.
Toney’s penalty and a batted pass by defensive tackle Ed Oliver left the Chiefs needing a 4th-and-15 conversion to have any chance of survival. Mahomes’ pass fell incomplete, allowing the Bills to celebrate a big road win.
Mahomes was furious on the sideline after the game, and more frustration was evident to defensive lineman Chris Jones and defensive line coach Joe Cullen early in the game.
If the Chiefs had been able to come back with a tie or win, the Bills’ time management would have come under some scrutiny after the game. After the sack was wiped out by an illegal contact penalty on third down with just over two minutes left, the Bills called three pass plays, two of which fell incomplete, giving the Chiefs more time to try to mount a comeback after Buss’ field goal. In the first half of Sunday’s game, the Bills ran away with a 14-0 lead on Josh Allen’s touchdown run and touchdown pass, but touchdowns from Jerick McKinnon and Laci Rice brought the Chiefs within 17-14. We entered the 4th quarter. They tied the game with 11 minutes remaining, but a three-and-out on their next drive gave the Bills more than five minutes before the game-winning field goal.
The win moves the Bills to 7-6 and increases their chances of making the AFC playoffs, but there won’t be much time to celebrate until they turn their attention to the Cowboys in Week 14. The Chiefs are currently 8-5 with two wins left. If Miami wins on Monday night, both the Dolphins and Ravens will be a game back in the race for the AFC’s top seed. They are one game behind the Broncos and have a trip to New England next Sunday.
