Sometimes it’s hard to find ways to stay healthy. So we asked members of the Baylor College of Medicine community to share what they do in their daily lives to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Dr. Ahmed Awan, assistant professor of nephrology at the Margaret M. Albert B. Alkek School of Medicine, shared some of his healthy habits.
Question: What health decisions do you make at the beginning of your day?
answer: I try to start my day by talking to my wife, kids, and parents for a few minutes. I believe social connections are the best predictor of longevity.
Q: What is a healthy breakfast?
A: I have a typical Pakistani breakfast that includes parathas (bread with olive oil) and either eggs or vegetables. No matter what you eat, it always comes with a cup of tea.
Q: What is your favorite type of exercise?
answer: My favorite exercise is the goblet squat. It’s a healthy exercise that trains your entire body.
Q: What keeps you motivated during training?
Endorphins 🙂 Tonal has instructor-led workouts, and they are usually the ones who keep me motivated. Also, being able to see the calories you burn on your smartwatch is a great motivator.
Q: What activities do you do if you are unable to attend a full training session?
answer: I play soccer or basketball with the kids.
Q: What is your favorite healthy snack?
answer: fruit yogurt
Q: What should I include in my child’s lunch?
answer: Fruit and some form of chicken or fish
Q: How can I turn an unhealthy recipe into a healthy one (healthy substitute)?
answer: We try to minimize salt and sugar in all of our recipes whenever possible.
Q: What is your skin care routine at night?
answer: Clinique men’s moisturizer
Q: What hobbies help you relax?
answer: I play chess and watch sitcoms.
Q: What is your go-to restaurant in Houston for a healthy meal?
answer: Wolfgang Puck – They have great seafood
Q: Do you use an activity tracker or Fitbit? What is your daily step goal?
answer: yes.
Q: What is your favorite health tip?
answer: I rarely eat cake, cupcakes, chocolate, or cookies.
