Tourism Minister Fatima Al Sayrafi revealed yesterday that the contribution of tourism to gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to be 11.4% by the end of 2026.
She told the weekly Shura Council that plans were being made to achieve the goals through the National Tourism Strategy 2022-2026.
Her comments came as Shura members unanimously approved new fines and fines to be imposed on owners and operators of tourism properties who violate rules and regulations.
Dalal Al Zayed, chairman of the Shura’s Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee, proposed the establishment of a special prosecutor’s office and court to investigate tourism cases, rather than being treated as general cases in administrative courts.
“We aim to transform the tourism sector into an investment hub and a major source of the economy,” Ms Al Sayrafi said.
“Our plan is to achieve a contribution of 11.4% to GDP by the end of 2026,” she added.
Based on the Prime Minister’s proposal and after approval by the Cabinet, His Majesty King Hamad promulgated Decree Law No. 16 of 2023, which amends some provisions of Decree No. 15 of 1986 regarding tourism regulations, in September.
The decree was approved by MPs during the week’s parliament last Tuesday.
Based on this, the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition Authority (BTEA) will take action against fraudulent operators, while complaints may be appealed to a special court.
Shura first vice president Jamal Fakhroh expressed concern about the possibility of authorities overreaching in penalties, while member Fouad al-Haj said there was a need for more discipline in addition to “naming and shaming.” He said there is.
Dr. Ibtisam Al Dalal, Chairman of the Services Commission, noted that the sector is showing growth.
“Last year, the number of tourists passing through King Fahd Causeway increased by 185% compared to the previous year, and the number of tourists passing through Bahrain International Airport increased by 102%,” she said.
“But we need more intensive training for people in this field and more interest from young Bahraini entrepreneurs.”
Member Dr. Hani Al Saati called for more emphasis on tourism in the Hawar Islands.
