With 6 minutes, 24 seconds left in Sunday’s game, C.J. Stroud’s helmet bounced off the MetLife Stadium turf, causing a splash.
Texans coach DeMeco Ryans confirmed Monday that the rookie quarterback is in concussion protocol following a hit by Quinnen Williams.
“CJ is still in concussion protocol,” Lyons said via video from the team. “We’ll keep an eye on him throughout the week and hope he continues to get better.”
Few players in the NFL return to action a week after being diagnosed with a concussion. Most notably, Saints quarterback Derek Carr was cleared on Friday, five days after his diagnosis, and played on Sunday.
Mr Stroud will have to go through stages, the final stage of which will be the OK from an independent neurologist.
Therefore, the Texans have no way of knowing today whether Stroud will play on Sunday.
“We’ll see. We’ll see how he progresses throughout this week,” Lyons said. “This can only heal on its own, but I don’t think many players come back from a concussion the next week. At the end of the day, you have to make sure your players are healthy, no matter their position, no matter who they are. Yes, we protect our players and they are right about head injuries. We have to make sure we protect all of our guys. Everyone just wants to get to the next game, the next opportunity. It’s not about getting excited, it’s about their long-term health. We care about them as people off the field and we want to make sure their health is most important to us. I am.”
Davis Mills is the backup quarterback, with Case Keenum behind him. Mills started 26 games over the past two seasons before the Texans drafted Stroud with the second overall pick.
