Luton captain Tom Lockyer collapsed to the ground during Saturday’s game against Bournemouth when the match was abandoned.
Lockyer, 29, was seen falling first to the floor with no one around. Luton manager Rob Edwards then rushed onto the pitch and tried to drag his players off the field while the medical team worked to treat Lockyer.
The match was initially suspended, but the cancellation was announced just as players and staff from both teams returned to the pitch to applaud their fans.
Luton Town manager Rob Edwards appeared extremely emotional with tears in his eyes as he went to applaud the fans.
What’s the latest?
Through UK partner Sky Sports, Tom Lockyer was said to be “alert and responsive” in the latest update.
The game was stopped with less than 60 minutes remaining, with the score tied at 1-1, as fans in the stands chanted his name and attention focused on Tom Lockyer on the pitch. Lockyer was then carried off the field on a stretcher.
About 30 minutes later, the Premier League announced that the match had been cancelled.
Lockyer, a Wales international, also collapsed as Luton defeated Coventry City in the Championship play-off final at Wembley in May 2023 to earn promotion to the Premier League for the first time in their history. After that incident, he underwent heart surgery in the summer and was fully cleared for his return to play.
Lockyer has been an inspirational leader in Luton’s rise to the top flight.
