Luton captain Tom Lockyer suffered a cardiac arrest during an English Premier League match in Bournemouth on Saturday and collapsed on the field, but was given first aid in hospital.
Lockyer, 29, received about seven minutes of treatment on the field as fans at Vitality Stadium looked on anxiously. The match was stopped shortly after he was carried off on a stretcher.
The score was now 1-1 and the clock stopped in the 65th minute, prompting referee Simon Hooper to abandon the match.
“Our medical staff confirmed that the Hatters captain had gone into cardiac arrest on the pitch, but was responsive by the time he was taken away on a stretcher,” Luton said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). announced. “He underwent further treatment inside the stadium, for which we once again thank the medical teams on both sides.
“We would like to reassure supporters that Tom was taken to hospital in a stable condition and is currently undergoing further tests with his family at his bedside.”
The club said players from both teams were “not in a mental state to continue” after Lockyer collapsed. They then returned to the field and applauded the supporters who remained and shouted Lockyer’s name. Luton manager Rob Edwards burst into tears.
“Thank you to everyone in the stadium for their wonderful applause and singing the Rocks’ name during these difficult times,” Luton said. “Now is the time for all our players, staff and supporters to come together as always and offer our love and support to Tom and his family.”
Lockyer, a centre-back who plays for the Wales national team, collapsed on the grass as there were no other players nearby.
Players from both teams were alarmed by the incident and called for help. Edwards also ran onto the field and appeared to be in pain.
This is the second time this year that Lockyer has collapsed during a game. He made a similar appearance in the Championship play-off final against Coventry at Wembley Stadium in May and underwent heart surgery.
Luton took the lead in Saturday’s match with a goal from Ilya Adebayo in the third minute, before Dominic Solanke equalized in the 58th minute.
