The Giants have a large number of young pitchers in their system, which many consider to be one of the organization’s strengths.
But there are other areas that need improvement, and San Francisco could be looking to acquire one of those young weapons in the near future.
The Giants are “entertaining” the idea, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported in a Friday column, saying they are evenly matched even if they don’t acquire a starting pitcher through MLB free agency or trade. The man on the mound at Oracle Park has a promising future, but San Francisco is looking to improve its defense by becoming younger and more athletic, which could involve a trade.
“Failure to add a veteran starting pitcher may make the Giants even more reluctant to let go of their pitching staff,” Rosenthal wrote. “But the team needs to add young, athletic position players who can play defense. Hanging a young arm might be the best way to accomplish that.”
Left-hander Kyle Harrison, who made his MLB debut this season, is certainly not a starting pitcher, but the Giants have a number of potential starters, including Carson Whisenhunt and Mason Black, or two others who debuted last season, including Rosenthal. There are other talented pitchers listed as well. Tristan Beck and Keaton Wynn.
This decision could depend on who the Giants sign to add Logan Webb and Logan Webb to the top of the rotation. They reportedly have a contract offer on the table for Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Yoshinobu Yamamoto is one of the most coveted pitchers on the free agent market, along with National League Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell.
It remains to be seen whether the Giants will turn to the trade market to improve their defense, but if they do intend to listen to offers for the young pitcher, they are sure to attract the attention of teams across the league. .
