In the midst of making an innocuous comment about the Eagles’ poor offensive performance after yet another loss, Jalen Hurts let it slip:
“I don’t think we did enough.”
Do you think we are not trying hard enough?
That’s a pretty damning statement coming from the Super Bowl quarterback and unquestioned leader of the Eagles after a last-minute 20-17 loss to the Seahawks in Seattle on Monday night.
The full quote follows: We’re all on the same page, we’re all on the same page. we didn’t run. I don’t think we were all committed enough. You know, we have to turn it around. You know, this is a challenge that we have to address. Just keep seeing it through. ”
The Eagles are certainly struggling. After starting with 10 wins and 1 loss, it was a three-game losing streak. Hearts have lost as many games in the last 16 days as they lost in the previous 733 days. Everyone on both sides of the ball is looking for answers.
But is there a lack of commitment?
That’s pretty powerful stuff.
Harts immediately asked what that meant, and he said:
“I promise you, I don’t have a dictionary,” he said. “I don’t know what else to say.”
Commitment is defined as “the state or quality of being devoted to a cause or activity.”
So it certainly sounds like Hurts is questioning his teammates’ dedication, and perhaps his own, to the cause of winning football games.
That’s very disturbing to hear.
Asked again about the lack of commitment, he said, “Everyone needs to give their all in every way, and that starts with me.”
One thing about Hurts is that he always takes responsibility.
He oddly singled out Jason Kelce for a damaging false start at number three.rdOne-and-one from the Seattle 3-yard line late in the second quarter. A penalty that forced the Eagles to settle for a field goal when they had a good chance of scoring seven points.
But he also chose himself.
Honestly, this is Hurts’ worst three-game streak since very early in his first few years as a starter.
Despite losses to the 49ers, Cowboys, and Seahawks, he completed 59 percent of his passes with one passing touchdown, two interceptions, and three rushing TDs, totaling 212 passing yards per game and a 72.4 passer rating. Ta. His 40.1 rating on Monday night was his lowest since an injured game against the Giants in 2021.
True, he was pretending to be sick. But that’s no excuse. If you are too unwell to function at a high level, you should not go out.
One thing about Hurts is that he is responsible and his teammates always notice that.
“We ended up having a lot of chances,” he said. “I couldn’t have done it any better.
“You know, the trust that we have in each other, how much we communicate as players and take advantage of the moments to start the game, whether it’s the last minutes or the beginning.
“Missed starts in short yardage situations. We’ve got to be better. We’ve got to minimize mistakes, penalties, mental errors more. Just play team football and that’s what I’m going to do.” It starts with leading.”
After averaging 28 points in the first 11 games of the season, the Eagles have scored fewer than 20 points in three consecutive games.
And Hearts were mediocre at best in each of those games. He increased his season turnover total to 17 with five fumbles and 12 interceptions. He lost one fumble and threw six interceptions last year.
“We’ve lost games because we could have been better,” he said. “It would change everything. I accept it.”
