The Packers suspended cornerback Jaire Alexander for Sunday’s game against the Vikings after his strange behavior before last week’s game. I almost missed the coin toss.
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst announced that the Packers have decided to suspend Alexander. In last week’s game against the Panthers, Alexander went to midfield for the coin toss even though he hadn’t yet been announced as the team’s captain, immediately made a gaffe, and told the referee the Packers wanted to play defense.
“The decision to suspend a player is never easy and is not made lightly. Unfortunately, Jaire’s actions prior to the game at Carolina led us to take this action.” Gutekunst said. “As an organization, we expect everyone to put the team first. Although we are disappointed, we had a good conversation with Jaire this morning. As we move forward together, We fully expect him to learn from this. He has been and continues to be a valuable member of this team, so we look forward to having him back next week.”
The referee allowed the Packers to make it clear that Alexander wanted to postpone until the second half, but if Alexander’s statement was taken literally, the Packers would have to kickoff to start both halves. It wouldn’t have happened. The Packers want to make it clear that Alexander appeared at midfield for the coin toss without coach Matt LaFleur’s permission and then toss it himself, something the Packers want to make clear will not be tolerated.
