HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) – Have you been outside lately? The past two days have been like a scene from a movie. the day after tomorrow Everything is white and frosted. This is all thanks to the ice fog. While it can be a gorgeous winter wonderland, it can also make travel dangerous. So what is ice fog? Well, it forms just like normal fog. One of those causes is when warm, moist air moves over a cold surface. As it moves over a colder surface, such as a snowpack, warm air cools and becomes saturated. It won’t be able to retain water. Moisture condenses into small particles in the air, forming fog. Now, when the temperature drops below freezing, the tiny water droplets that make up fog become supercooled. When these water droplets come into contact with a surface that is also below freezing, they freeze instantly, forming a layer of hoarfrost. Surfaces where these droplets can freeze include tree branches, stairs, railings, sidewalks, roads, and vehicles. This can be seen in a video taken from around the Local4 property yesterday afternoon. It’s certainly a beautiful sight. However, you should use extreme caution if you must travel. When the fog freezes, black ice can form on the roads. Black ice is difficult to see and is especially dangerous.
