In a small town in the American state of North Dakota, a seemingly ordinary night turns into a dramatic rescue mission thanks to a cat named Binx. A local Dyers family experienced a life-changing event on December 1 when their cat bravely defended their Havanese puppy, Oakley, from a relentless coyote attack. This heartwarming story, captured on a family’s outdoor surveillance camera, shows an extraordinary act of bravery unfolding in their backyard.
Homeowner Lane Dyer detailed the harrowing incident to Fox News Digital, explaining that she only let Oakley out for a short time while she took care of other dogs inside. Suddenly, the family heard a commotion and were startled when Mr Oakley rushed back into the house bleeding profusely from cuts on his chest and side.
Mr Dyer’s wife immediately administered first aid, bandaged Mr Oakley’s wounds and took him to an emergency veterinarian, but the family remained unaware of the cause of the attack.
On the way to the vet, the Dyers decided to review outdoor surveillance footage and uncover the mystery behind Oakley’s injuries. To their surprise, they witness their cat friend Binx confronting two coyotes during the attack. Without hesitation, Binx hissed and pounced on the predator, valiantly defending the small dog.
Binx, a stray cat, adopted the Dyers’ garden as his home and had been visiting the house since he was just a few weeks old. Despite attempts to bring Binx indoors, Binx preferred to live outdoors and thrived in the elements. Dyer speculated that Binks’ past experiences may have given her the skills to protect herself and others when needed.
The Dyers stressed that this is the first time a coyote has attacked a neighbor’s pet. Coyotes could be heard howling in the evenings, but the predators had never ventured this close to homes before. The incident was a wake-up call for the family and their community.
After Oakley’s treatment and stitches, the Havanese puppy made a full recovery, thanks to the Dyers’ quick action and Binks’ bravery. The family was grateful for the safety of their pet and shared their experience as a lesson to other pet owners.
Lane Dyer now advises pet owners not to underestimate the threat posed by coyotes. He urged caution and stressed the importance of viewing coyotes as potential predators that can attack without warning.
