Bahrain is an archipelago state in the Persian Gulf with a total area of approximately 780 square kilometers. The main island of Al Bahrain occupies approximately 78% of the country. The island is surrounded by many of the Middle East’s most important oil fields. A further 33 islands are also part of the country. Although Bahrain does not technically share borders with other countries, it is connected to Saudi Arabia by a causeway on the western side of the country.

As you can see in the physical map of Bahrain above, almost 92% of Bahrain is desert with low-lying rock and sand plains. Coastal salt marshes are common in the central and southern regions, and there are no significant rivers or lakes.
Jabal ad dukam, the cliffs in Bahrain’s interior are the highest points in the country, reaching heights of 400 feet (122 m). Its location is marked on the map with a yellow right triangle. The rest of Bahrain is largely flat and consists of sand dunes and rocky arid terrain.
additional islands Umm al-Sabaan, Nabi Saleh and Jeddah Island are also part of Bahrain. Nabi Saleh’s landscape is dotted with freshwater springs and date palm groves, and Jeddah’s rocky outcrops are home to a state prison converted into a holiday resort. The remaining uninhabited islands serve as nesting grounds for migratory birds.
