SACRAMENTO – The newest exhibit featured at the California Automobile Museum celebrates women and lowriders. Participants say it’s unlike anything they’ve seen before.
It’s the second week of the Ladies in Lowriders exhibition.
Here, women are breaking the mold of a hobby traditionally consumed by men and showing that they, too, can ride just as low.
“They’re under the hood, they’re under the cars, and today we celebrate women and diversity,” said Kellan McLaughlin of the California Automobile Museum.
For lowrider and exhibit manager Xabola Rodriguez, the car show shines a light on a unique group of women who are rarely in the spotlight.
“The fact that we are in a space like this is that we are in an actual museum, not just being recognized in an all-female exhibit,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez also said the exhibit is a way to spark interest in a new generation of women.
“Seeing the women, the mothers, the aunts carrying on the culture of this generation was everything to me,” Rodriguez said.
Cars aren’t the only exhibits.
Cecelia Perez is one of several artists featured in the Chicano exhibit.
“I like to depict in my artwork not only the music I like to listen to, but also what I saw as a child,” Perez said.
Whether it’s the art of lowrider cars, Rodriguez said the community feels like a sisterhood doing something new.
“This has never been done before and it’s amazing,” Rodriguez said.
If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, there’s still time. The exhibition will be on display until April.
