Looking back at the history of the Bahrain Championship
The Bahrain Championship will make its debut on the DP World Tour during the 2024 season. This is the circuit’s return to Bahrain for the first time since the Volvo Golf Championship was held there in 2011.
The 2011 Volvo Golf Championship was held at the Montgomery Course at the Royal Golf Club of Bahrain, the same venue as the Bahrain Championship. A 7,261 yard, par 72 course designed by Scottish star Colin Montgomerie.
Paul Casey won the 2011 tournament with a score of 20-under 268, one stroke ahead of Peter Hanson and Miguel Angel Jimenez. There were three other editions of this tournament, all held in South Africa.
In 2012, the Montgomery Course hosted an exhibition tournament, the Bahrain Invitational, where Colin Montgomery, Paul Casey, Thomas Bjorn, and Susan Pettersen played. Also in attendance at the event were tennis player Tim Henman, American football player Joe Montana, and soccer players Ruud Gullit and Gianluca Vialli.
The Bahrain event is the 10th of the 2024 DP World Tour season and the penultimate of five events to be held in the Middle East at this stage of the year. The circuit is in the midst of a major international season and will not return to European soil until the end of May (Belgium’s Soudal Open).
In fact, the 2024 DP World Tour season will be very global. Excluding the four major tournaments, the circuit will span 21 countries.
