Doha, Qatar: Takefusa Kubo is confident that Japan is well prepared for today’s AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 Round of 16 encounter against Bahrain at Al Thumama Stadium.
Japan finished Group D in second place and advanced to the final tournament, while Bahrain topped Group E, surpassing South Korea.
Kubo, who played in all three group stage matches, said he is preparing a game plan to help Japan move one step closer to winning a record-extending fifth AFC Asian Cup.
“We have seen some teams who were favorites stumble in the knockout stages and we want to avoid that tomorrow. Preparation will be key for us,” said the Real Sociedad midfielder. .
“Once we get into the knockout stages, we don’t have to focus on how other teams play. Our biggest concern is our own performance. We need to focus on what we can do.”
“In the (group stage) game against Iraq (Japan lost 2-1), we conceded a goal early on, but that is a mistake we don’t want to repeat. Bahrain’s approach could be the same as Iraq. Therefore, it is important to learn from past mistakes.
“Dealing with the physicality of Bahrain, we have played against physical teams in this tournament, but playing against them is not a problem for us. We are ready for the challenges that come with it.
“I have played against many Asian teams both for club and country. I have no hesitation in playing against these teams as I bring my experience to the table. We have confidence in our abilities. I have it and am ready to tackle the task at hand.”
