Volkswagen is considering the possibility of launching an entry-level electric SUV in India due to tax incentives.
India’s entry-level passenger electric vehicle segment is gaining momentum with two major companies dominating the space: Tata and MG. Tata’s all-electric Tiago was the most affordable offering in the segment, but the MG Comet managed to undercut the Tiago. Moving to higher segments, Tata Nexon leads the segment and now Volkswagen is also eyeing this space.
VW Group plans to launch an entry-level electric SUV in India, Reuters reports
Volkswagen has completely revamped its products in India in the last few years after exiting the Polo. With the launch of Virtus and Taigun, the company recorded steady growth. From January to December 2022, Volkswagen India sold 1,34,667 units and in 2023, it sold 1,45,713 units, registering a growth of 8.2%.
Even Skoda has updated its lineup with the launch of the Slavia and Kushak, which share their underpinnings, powertrain and other components with the Virtus and Taigun. So if VW launches an EV, we can expect a Skoda version as well.
However, the Skoda Enyak is the brand’s first fully electric vehicle.
