Spokane Police respond to fatal motor vehicle/pedestrian crash.Driver arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide
Just after 7 p.m. on February 3, 2024, Spokane Police were called to the intersection of N Morton Street and E Empire Avenue in northeast Spokane for a collision between two vehicles and a pedestrian.
According to preliminary investigation, the 35-year-old woman was crossing Empire Avenue when she was struck by a vehicle traveling on the same road. She fell onto the roadway, at which point she was struck by the vehicle following her. Despite the best efforts of emergency personnel, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name will be released by the Spokane County Coroner’s Office.
The SPD Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene, as did drug detection experts from both SPD and the Washington State Patrol. After investigation, the driver of the first vehicle, Gary Thompson, 70, was found to be impaired. He was taken into custody on charges of vehicular homicide. The driver of the other vehicle was not at fault. Investigation is ongoing.
