Brent Town Police Chief Karl McMillan said they were called to the scene of a traffic accident. The light-colored vehicle in the photo above was traveling south on Highway 5 when it ran a red light at the Walmart entrance intersection and collided side-by-side with a dark-colored vehicle.
After the accident, the driver pulled out a weapon while sitting in the car and inflicted a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The driver, who was not a local, appears to have been traveling south along the River Brent. Investigators at the scene noticed several bullet holes on the outside of the vehicle, but the source of the bullet holes is unknown.
The injured driver was taken from the scene by ambulance and taken to UAB Hospital, where he remained unconscious and in critical condition as of the afternoon of February 9th. Chief McMillan declined to release the driver’s name because the investigation is ongoing. No one was injured in the dark-colored vehicle.
