The first World Smile Day was held in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1999 with the goal of encouraging acts of kindness and spreading happiness just by smiling, and has continued every year since.
After Harvey passed away in 2001, the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation was established to honor his name and memory. The Foundation continues to serve as an official sponsor of World Smile Day each year.
