Today, on Green Sports Day, Green Business Certification Inc. announced that Austin FC’s home venue, Q2 Stadium, is the first soccer-specific stadium in the world and the second sports stadium to receive Total Resource Use and Efficiency (TRUE) pre-certification. Announced as a venue. Pre-certification recognizes projects that have implemented the essential actions and policies necessary to effectively pursue zero waste.
“Sustainability was an integral part of Q2 Stadium’s design and remains a top priority as we strive to create a venue that Austinites can enjoy for years to come. ” said Austin FC President Andy Loughnane. “We are honored to receive this recognition in recognition of the stadium’s commitment to achieving zero waste.”
Since the opening of Q2 Stadium, staff have made a concerted effort to provide compostable packaging and tableware in all concession areas. Throughout his first two and a half seasons with the club, these initiatives have successfully diverted 75 percent of all waste generated at Q2 Stadium. Waste from Austin FC games and other stadium-packed events is hand-separated to increase the amount of material collected and diverted to landfills.
Club partners Texas Disposal Systems (TDS) and ABM have helped develop and implement strategies that continue to increase waste diversion rates at the stadium. TDS has its own team of volunteer trash goalkeepers who actively engage with fans to ensure the proper disposal of waste and are having a major impact on Q2 Stadium’s sustainability efforts. I launched it. Additionally, his certified TRUE advisors from Okapi Environmental Services have played a key role in guiding his Q2 Stadium through the certification process to date.
The stadium’s waste diversion efforts are all part of Austin FC’s Go Verde! A sustainability platform provided by YETI. He installed YETI hydration stations around the stadium concourses, which helped him reduce the use of more than 50,000 plastic bottles during the 2023 season alone.
