CANYON, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — West Texas A&M University will host a Science Community Night on Nov. 3 to celebrate the contributions science makes to the entire region and raise funds for W.T.’s science organizations .
The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 3 in Legacy Hall in the Jack B. Kelly Student Center and will include a silent bar and cash bar, officials said. Tickets are $10 for students and $25 for alumni and community members. If you are interested, please purchase your tickets here by October 18th.
“This first-of-its-kind event aims to celebrate all the contributions science has made to our country and region,” said Dr. Nick Flynn, professor of biochemistry in the WT Department of Chemistry and Physics. “Many of the problems we experience today will be solved by scientists, so we need to celebrate the important contributions our students are making to society.”
WT will deliver the keynote address by Dr. Joseph Acheson, a 2013 WT graduate and postdoctoral fellow at Abilene Christian University, officials added. Acheson, a Canyon native, helped develop new ways to “track electron beams” at Jefferson National Laboratory while a student at WT. Acheson also earned his Ph.D. He received his PhD in nuclear theory from Texas A&M University, currently focusing on experimental nuclear physics.
Additionally, funds raised during the event will be donated to the following WT student science organizations:
- american chemical society
- climate society
- companion animal club
- Environmental Science Society
- geological society
- Pre-health care club
- Pre-veterinary medicine club
- physics society student
- tri beta
- wildlife association
This fund funds conference costs, field trips, member supplies, and attendance at the organization’s professional conferences.
